We use stem sentences to help us to explain what we know in maths. What us use some of them below…
Can you show your parents how you use stem sentences to explain these numbers?

We work collaboratively in maths. The equipment helps us to see the maths. We use stem sentences to help us to explain the maths.
Maths is even more fun when you’re allowed to write on the table! The children enjoyed ordering the numbers using numicon and then writing the numeral and word representation of the number on the table.
Top tip: Don’t forget to include a zero when ordering numbers.
Now that we are learning one more than and one less than, we are using numicon to create number lines. We now know that if we line the numbers up from smallest on the left and largest on the right, the numbers are going up by one more when going forwards and going down by one less when going backwards
After a week of studying shapes, Year 1 spent their maths lesson exploring 3D shapes. Some children were making them and some children we stacking them to build things with!
On Thursday Year 1 were challenged with this question:
Max has 17 litres of paint in total.
He has 5 litres of blue paint.
How many litres were yellow?
Many of the children drew a part whole model on their whiteboard to help them complete the question. Well done to this young lady for being able to explain to the class, how she came to the answer.
We have looked at part whole models with 3 parts today. The children have been learning that 1 number can be partitioned in to many ways in 3 parts.
Can you you explain how we use the part whole model to work out different parts of numbers?
In maths this week we are working on numbers to 20. Today we matched number with the correct number of dots; counted how many items are in a suitcase; checked that we have enough spare PE kit; made numbers out of play dough and practised writing our numbers the correct way around.
