“Quote of the Day” – Handwriting Practice

Astrid Lindgren (1907 -2002)

This great Swedish author wrote more than 30 books for children and is the 18th most translated author in the world. She wrote several series of books; her most famous characters being Pippi Longstocking, Emil of Lönneberga and Karlsson-on-the-Roof. She also wrote several famous fantasy books including Ronia the Robber’s Daughter and The Brother’s Lionheart.

Todays’ Question: What is the capital of Sweden? And, which of our spelling words also means someone who comes from Sweden?? 🙂

Spelling Test.

You could put these tests in the back of your red exercise book. Remember not to waste space :). Give yourself a quick 5-minute revision; rule up, date up and play the audio. Make a list of the ones you get wrong and keep practising them with this week’s spellings. Try the test again when you’re ready and see if you can get 100%.

Floodland – “Before” – Chapter 1

First, we should have a look at the illustrations for Floodland. You might have noticed that they are ‘wood engravings by the author.’ Wood engraving is a long and difficult process. The first printed illustrations were done this way hundreds of years ago.

Q: Why do you think Marcus Sedgwick chose this ancient technology to illustrate his story set in the future? We’ll come back to this later but if you have any ideas, put them in your red book.
