Before we start today, we need to learn a little about how cameras and photography worked before digital cameras. Until about 20 years ago, photographs had to be developed in a darkroom using special chemicals. It could be a long and difficult process. Look at the two videos below to see how cameras used to work and how photographs used to be made.
This is the type of camera that Aunt Gloria gives to Salim, telling him that it will make him a better photographer. It also features in today’s story – the Sherlock Holmes classic – The Red-headed League. As Ted and Kat’s investigation continues, Ted looks to the most famous sleuth of them all for inspiration. Today we are taking a break from the London Eye Mystery to find out more about Sherlock Holmes.
Chinese New Year celebrations begin today and I’ve found some good videos to tell us all about it. Do you know your Chinese zodiac sign? Watch the first one to found out.
Amaryllis
This is my favourite time of year because all the bulbs start to come out. This is my amaryllis bulb. When it flowers it will should look something like one of the flowers in the picture above, but I’ve no idea which one; it will be a surprise!
Here are some interesting facts about the amaryllis:
Amaryllis means to sparkle in Greek.
Most amaryllis bulbs come from Holland and South Africa.
Amaryllis reproduce by growing “daughter” bulbs next to the “mother” bulbs.
It takes three to five years for a daughter bulb to reach a mature size.
You can grow amaryllis from seed, but it can take up to six years for them to reach maturity and produce flowers.
Properly cared for, an amaryllis plant can live for 75 years!
