Who was Mary Seacole?

Mary Seacole (1805 – 1881) was a Jamaican nurse who became well known in the Victorian period for her nursing efforts during the Crimean War. Though she was much respected by officers whom she treated during the war, after her death, her fame diminished, though in recent years she has become better known.

Mary Seacole, In 1855, with the help of a relative of her husband,
she went to Crimea as a subtler, setting up the British Hotel to sell food,
supplies, and medicines to the troops. She assisted the wounded at the
military hospitals and was a familiar figure at the transfer points for
casualties from the front.

HOW DID MARY SECOLE GAIN FAME?

When the Crimean War broke out, she applied to the War Office to assist within the war but however was refused. She traveled independently and set up her hotel and assisted the battlefield wounded. She became extremely popular among service personnel, who raised money for her when she faced destitution after the war.
