World Book Day 2017

On Thursday 2nd March St Vincent’s celebrated World Book Day and our classroom was overtaken with characters from lots of different stories! Children thoroughly enjoyed meeting the Jolly Postman during our WBD assembly where it transpired that an imposter had taken something from the following characters: The Monster, Miss Bear, Zippy the Zebra, Robin Hood, Mickey Mouse, Mary Poppins and Alice in Wonderland! Children were full of excitement throughout the day for the tea party where they’d find out who was our culprit! During the tea party our paper chains that we’d enjoyed making earlier in the day were connected and contain the favourite books of all of the children and staff from our school!

Our Lent Prayer Service

On Tuesday 28th February –Shrove Tuesday, Year 2 held a beautiful collective worship where children were sat in a circle with a tree in the centre as their focus point. We discussed the children’s understanding of Lent and were able to answer the following questions that we’d asked before half term:

  • What does Lent lead up to?
  • Why is Lent 40 days long?
  • What do Christians do during Lent?
  • When does Lent finish?

Children were extremely respectful throughout our collective worship and showed us just how good they are as friends when they listened attentively to one another speaking.

Children were then given a leaf each and asked to write one thing that they were sorry for, then they were told to turn their leaves over and write a Lenten promise that they would try hard to keep for the next 40 days. We called this activity turning over a new leaf. After this, children hung their leaves on our tree that had been our focus point and that remains in our classroom as a reminder of the promises that we have made.

Well done Year 2!

Our Science Investigation featuring Traction Man

Parachutes for Traction Man’s Adventure!

Year 1 and Year 2 carried out an investigation that considered whether the size of Traction Man’s parachute affected the time that it took him to reach the ground.

First they discussed the investigation and predicted what they thought might happen when we changed the size of Traction Man’s parachute. Following this, children went outside where they carried out the experiment. There were three different sized parachutes but all of the other variables (the height at which Traction Man ‘jumped’ from) remained the same.  Once children had finished their experiment, they went back into class to write up their results.

Our Mini-Adventures

In Year 2 we have been reading Traction Man by Mini Grey. Children have thoroughly enjoyed this book as it has allowed them to be extremely creative. With an action outfit for every occasion, Traction Man patrols the house saving toys, guarding toast, searching for lost wrecks and rescuing damsels in distress. Year 2 were challenged with creating their own mini adventure for Traction Man and below you can see some of their role plays that they created before getting down to the writing!

Working Scientifically

In Year 2 we’ve been learning all about the properties of different materials.

To allow children to test these properties we carried out a simple experiment that allowed children to test previously made predictions. Children discussed how to make this a fair experiment and if they were to do it again which variables they could change.

Our experiment allowed us to determine which material would work best at keeping Ted (our class elephant) dry! Poor Ted got very wet and the children LOVED it!

Non-Fiction – My Princess Boy

We had so much fun during our Paths lesson in Year 2 today! We were reading The Princess Boy by Cheryl Kilodavis. The Princess Boy fiction picture book about acceptance. In the story a 4 year old boy who happily expresses his authentic self by happily dressing up in dresses, and enjoying traditional girl things such as jewellery and anything pink or sparkly.way through the book we stopped and children were asked what will happen? Their responses were noted on the flipchart and you can see this below. Following this children discussed how the little boy was different from his older brother. Below, you can see pictures of children from Year 2 ‘twirling’, a dance move that was very popular with the young boy in the story.

Algorithms!

As part of our theme topic this term children have been planning their routes to and from school. In order to combine this with our computing topic, children had the opportunity to program our class Bee Bot with the correct algorithms to allow him to reach a required destination.

The children had great fun with this and even taught me a thing or two about algorithms!
